How to choose the best location for your Photography Session?

You have decided to book a portrait session. No matter what type of session you are booking; an engagement session, new headshots, an updated family portrait, or maybe your child has hit a key milestone; one year, high school senior, etc., whatever the case may be, the next decision is to determine the location. Where should we take the photos? This question is the one asked the most by my clients. Location is one of the critical decisions you'll make when it comes to having your pictures taken. Decisions about the session, including what time of day, which outfits to wear, and the most suitable poses to use, will be determined by your location choice. As your photographer, I will help you find the perfect spot for your session using the tips below.

Choose a Location That Has Meaning

Do you have a favorite picnic spot? A beach you and your family visit every year to build sandcastles? Is the playground where your children are happiest? When capturing the essence of you or your family at a meaningful location allows us to create engaging, personal photos because everyone feels joyful and comfortable. The place you have chosen holds special memories. The imagery we create will show true happiness and provide a "heart-smile" moment when you look at the portraits hanging on your wall. If the location has emotional ties, you are going to love your images even more.

Choose a Location That Fits Your Personality

The location of your session is the perfect way to showcase your personality! Especially you seniors. If you prefer casual attire for your session (jeans and Doc Martins, for example), an urban setting with brick walls and streetscapes would create a great backdrop. Alternatively, if you love more formal clothing, you could still choose an urban location with a more classical architecture with columns and stone. If you are carefree and outdoorsy, a field of flowers or the water's edge might be more your style. I am here as your full-service photographer to help you dream up the perfect setting that matches your personality and vision.

Consider the Design Style of Your Home

Consider your home's interior design style when planning a location to take your portraits is a critical part of the planning process. When thinking with the end in mind (the family portrait you want to hang over your mantel), the style and color scheme of your home décor can influence the location of your session. A modern home with industrial furnishings can call for images from an urban site. A beach session will be perfect for a home with a coastal/cottage interior design. Portrait images set in an open field or near a rustic barn will complement your country farmhouse. The in-person consultation before your session is ideal for seeing your home to suggest locations that will complement your décor.

 Let me help you

When my clients can't think of a location with special meaning to them, I will work with them to determine what works best. What I find works well is to meet ahead of time for an in-person consultation that allows me to get to know you, learn your preferences, see your home décor first-hand and learn about your family to advise you on the perfect location. I provide this consultation to my clients as part of a boutique business model's full-service level of care.

Now that you have an idea of how to find the perfect location, the only thing left is to schedule your session. If you are looking for a professional who can capture your special moments and provide heirloom quality artwork for your home,  I would love to serve you.
